The beginning

Hi guys, it’s Ethan.

If you somehow ended up on this page, you’re probably here because of sealants — which is already more interest than most people ever show this product.

I’ve been working with sealants since 2021, and yes, I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with them.

Silicone sealant was actually the first product I worked with when I entered international trade.

And just like a lot of people, I had absolutely no idea what it actually did.

I knew it came in a cartridge. I knew people squeezed it into gaps.

That was about it.

Compared with glass, aluminum, doors, windows, stone, or other building materials, sealant doesn’t exactly get much attention.

“Wow, nice sealant.”

Most of the time, you don’t even notice it.

But after working with it for a while, I realized something interesting:

the less noticeable a sealant is, the better it’s probably doing its job.

It sits quietly between materials, keeps water and air where they’re supposed to be, accommodates movement, protects joints, and connects materials that expand, contract, vibrate, and age differently.

On a curtain wall, for example, the glass and aluminum get all the attention.

But the joint between them still has to move, stay sealed, survive weather, and keep doing that year after year.

That tiny strip of sealant suddenly doesn’t feel quite so unimportant.

And then, of course, someone chooses the wrong one.

Now you have leaking joints, cracked sealant, adhesion failure, stained substrates, angry contractors, and a buyer asking why the “same silicone” worked perfectly on another project.

That’s the part I hate.

It’s also probably the reason I ended up learning so much about this product.

Five years later, somehow, I’m still talking about silicone every day.

What I do

So what do I actually do?

A surprisingly large part of my job is translating.

Not between languages.

Between what the customer says and what the factory actually needs to know.

“I need a high-quality silicone.”

Which, after five years in this industry, is still one of my least favorite sentences.

  • High quality for what?
  • Glass?
  • Windows?
  • Bathrooms?
  • Exterior joints?
  • Curtain walls?
  • What climate?
  • What substrate?
  • What price level?
  • What kind of customer are you selling to?

That’s usually where the real conversation starts.

Most buyers don’t arrive with a perfect technical specification.

Sometimes a distributor only tells me the country, the target price, what competitors are selling, and one or two complaints from their customers.

That’s completely normal.

From there, I need to figure out things like:

  • what type of sealant makes sense;
  • whether acetoxy or neutral cure is more appropriate;
  • what quality level the market can support;
  • which performance characteristics actually matter;
  • whether curing speed needs to be adjusted;
  • what packaging makes sense;
  • and whether we should use an existing product or develop something closer to what the buyer already sells.

This is probably the part of the job I enjoy most.

Taking something vague and turning it into something the factory can actually produce.

OEM / Private label

Sometimes the customer already has a product.

That makes things easier.

Well... sometimes.

“Can you make this?”

The short answer is usually yes.

The useful answer takes a little longer.

Because “make this” could mean:

  • Do you want the same curing speed?
  • The same hardness?
  • The same elasticity?
  • The same extrusion feel?
  • The same color?
  • The same price?

Or do you just want your customers to feel like they’re buying something in the same category?

Those are very different requests.

For OEM and private-label projects, my job is to figure out what actually needs to be matched, what can be adjusted, and what those choices mean for performance, cost, and market positioning.

I don’t design chemical formulations myself.

I translate the buyer’s requirements into something our technical and formulation teams can work with.

Product comparison

I spend a lot of time looking at other products too.

We regularly buy and compare products already being sold in the market.

I’m especially familiar with product ranges from companies such as Dow, Wacker, Sika, and Soudal.

And I don’t just look at the label.

I focus on:

  • actual product samples;
  • curing behavior;
  • technical data;
  • packaging;
  • pricing;
  • product positioning;
  • performance;
  • and which applications or markets the product seems to be built for.

Sometimes this means testing two sealants side by side.

Sometimes it means staring at a TDS longer than any normal person probably should.

But over time, you start to see how a product is positioned before anyone tells you.

The price gives you clues.

The packaging gives you clues.

The technical data gives you clues.

And once you actually use the product, you usually get a few more.

Product decisions

Cheap doesn’t always mean bad. Expensive doesn’t always mean good.

Unfortunately, that would make buying sealant much easier.

There are markets where customers want the highest performance they can get.

There are also markets where the product needs to hit a very specific price.

Neither is automatically wrong.

A lower-cost formulation may give up some performance in order to reach a certain price point.

The question I care about is:

What exactly are we giving up, and does it matter for this application?

If a distributor is selling a general-purpose product for basic indoor sealing, they may not need the same performance level required for a high-movement exterior joint.

Paying for performance you don’t need isn’t particularly smart.

Neither is saving a few cents on the cartridge and then dealing with failures later.

Most product decisions live somewhere in between.

Knowing the boundary

I’m not an engineer.

But five years of working with sealants every day has taught me a lot about what works, what doesn’t, and when it’s time to ask an actual engineer.

I work with formulations, discuss technical specifications, review test reports, compare products, and conduct hands-on testing.

There are questions where experience gets you pretty far.

And there are questions where experience should know when to get out of the way.

If something involves deeper formulation chemistry, standardized testing, structural requirements, or a technical point I’m not sure about, I go to the people who deal with it every day.

Our factory team includes senior engineers, technical supervisors, laboratory personnel, and formulation engineers.

I’d much rather ask another question than confidently publish the wrong answer.

That sounds obvious.

The internet suggests otherwise.

Hands-on testing

I test sealants myself, too.

Just not in a white coat.

I regularly compare things like:

  • extrusion;
  • skin-over time;
  • curing behavior;
  • elasticity after curing;
  • adhesion on different materials;
  • and the overall feel of one product compared with another.

A TDS can tell you a lot.

But actually putting two products next to each other and using them can tell you things a table doesn’t.

If we need a proper tensile value, movement classification, adhesion result, or another standardized performance number, our professional laboratory and engineering teams can carry out the necessary testing.

International markets

The markets I work with

Most of my experience comes from working with buyers across:

Southeast Asia · Middle East · Africa · Europe · North America

That includes brand owners, distributors, contractors, experienced importers, and people importing sealants for the first time.

And markets can be surprisingly different.

The product a distributor wants in Southeast Asia may not be the one I’d suggest for the Middle East.

Climate matters.

Price matters.

Construction habits matter.

What customers are already used to buying matters.

Even curing speed or packaging format can become an important market preference.

That’s why I usually want to know where and how a product will be sold before recommending anything.

The editorial idea

Most of what I write starts with a real question.

This website isn’t meant to become an encyclopedia of sealants.

There are already enough pages online explaining that silicone is “a versatile material with excellent weather resistance.”

I’m more interested in questions buyers actually have.

  • Why is this sealant curing so slowly?
  • Can I use this product for a curtain wall?
  • Why did the sealant crack after a few months?
  • What does this number on the TDS actually tell me?
  • Should I choose acetoxy or neutral cure?
  • How do I know if a cheaper formulation is still good enough?
  • What should I send a factory if I want to develop my own product?
  • I’ve never imported sealant before. Where do I even start?

Those are much more interesting questions.

They’re also the questions I hear at work.

The research habit

Where I get my answers

When I don’t know something, I look it up.

When I think I know something but the answer matters, I usually look it up anyway.

Depending on the subject, that might mean checking:

  • our own TDS and test reports;
  • competitor TDS and SDS documents;
  • GB, ASTM, ISO, JC/T and other relevant standards;
  • technical manuals from major manufacturers;
  • laboratory reports;
  • academic or technical literature when relevant;
  • customer cases;
  • our factory’s engineering team;
  • or the actual product sitting on my desk.

I also spend time reading forums, Reddit discussions, search results, and real user questions.

But if dozens of people keep asking the same question, that’s a pretty good sign that the industry hasn’t explained something very well.

That’s often where an article begins.

Then I go looking for the technical answer.

A simple rule

The rule I try to follow is pretty simple

Don’t recommend a product just because we sell it.

If an acetoxy silicone is the wrong choice for an application, I’ll say it.

If an acrylic sealant shouldn’t be used somewhere with prolonged water exposure, I’ll say that too.

If one of our own Vesta products isn’t suitable for what you’re trying to do, the answer shouldn’t be:

“Maybe try it anyway.”

The answer should be:

“Use something else.”

Sealant is cheap compared with most of the things around it.

Repair work usually isn’t.

Why I write

Why I keep writing about this stuff

When I first entered the industry, I didn’t understand why anyone would need to know this much about something that comes in a plastic cartridge.

Now I understand why.

Sealants sit in the places where materials meet.

Glass meets aluminum.

Concrete meets metal.

A window frame meets a wall.

Two materials expand at different rates.

Water tries to get through.

Air tries to get through.

The building moves.

The temperature changes.

And this relatively unglamorous strip of material is expected to deal with all of it without anyone noticing.

So yes, I still have a love-hate relationship with sealants.

But after working with them since 2021, I’ve learned to respect them quite a bit more than I did at the beginning.

And if something I’ve learned can help a buyer avoid choosing the wrong product, asking the wrong question, or discovering a problem after the container has already arrived —

that’s probably worth writing down.
