Sealant Application Guide

Curtain Wall Perimeter Sealant Selection

Curtain wall perimeter joints are part of a complete facade system and must be reviewed against the project specification, joint design, adjacent materials and water-management strategy. WR550 is the current Vesta starting point for compatible non-structural perimeter weather seals exposed to ultraviolet light, rain and movement. This page does not present WR550 as a structural glazing adhesive or insulating-glass secondary seal.

Start with the product matched to the joint exposure, then confirm substrate compatibility and project requirements.

Where this application fits

Use the scene first to identify the joint, then check the substrate, exposure and movement below.

Curtain wall facade with exterior perimeter weather seals

Perimeter weather seals

Non-structural exterior joints around curtain wall and glazed-system perimeters.

Glass and aluminum facade perimeter connections

Glass-to-aluminum interfaces

Connections between compatible glazing surfaces, coated frames and adjacent facade panels.

High-rise glazed facade with perimeter movement joints

Movement and maintenance joints

Approved maintenance and non-structural movement joints coordinated with system drainage.

  • Exterior curtain wall perimeter weather seals
  • Glass-to-aluminum perimeter connections
  • Glazed-system-to-masonry interfaces
  • Facade panel transitions adjacent to curtain wall frames
  • Approved maintenance of existing perimeter weather seals
  • Non-structural exterior movement joints around glazed systems

Common substrates

  • Glass and compatible glazing surfaces
  • Anodized or coated aluminum frames
  • Coated metal and facade panels
  • Concrete, brick and masonry interfaces
  • Adjacent gaskets, coatings and backing materials after compatibility review

Key performance requirements

  • UV, rain and exterior weather resistance
  • Movement capacity matched to the perimeter joint
  • Adhesion to prepared glass, aluminum and adjacent materials
  • Compatibility with coatings, gaskets and insulating-glass edge seals
  • Joint geometry and drainage aligned with the curtain wall system design

Product selection guidance

Choose by service condition

Use the curtain wall system specification as the starting point. Confirm whether the joint is a perimeter weather seal or a structural glazing joint, then review adhesion, primer needs, movement, bead dimensions and compatibility with glass coatings, aluminum finishes, gaskets and insulating-glass edge seals before approval.

Before Application

Application considerations

  • Obtain the curtain wall system and project sealant specification.
  • Separate structural glazing joints from non-structural perimeter weather seals.
  • Run project-specific adhesion and compatibility testing on actual materials.
  • Confirm backer, bead dimensions, access, drainage and installation sequence.
  • Keep written approval and the applicable technical documents with the project file.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can WR550 be reviewed for curtain wall perimeter weather sealing?

Yes. WR550 is the current Vesta starting point for compatible non-structural curtain wall perimeter joints exposed to UV, rain and movement. Final approval still depends on the system specification, joint design, materials and project testing.

Is WR550 claimed as a structural glazing silicone?

No. Structural glazing suitability is not claimed on this page. Structural bonding requires the specified product, project-specific engineering, testing and written technical approval.

Do coated aluminum, gaskets and insulating-glass edge seals require compatibility review?

Yes. Coatings, gaskets, backing materials and insulating-glass edge seals can interact with sealants. Use actual project materials for adhesion and compatibility testing before approval.
