What does 100% silicone mean on a sealant label? It tells you that the manufacturer is presenting the named product as a silicone formulation. It does not tell you the cure system, ASTM class, approvals, tested substrates or every permitted use.
Treat the phrase as the start of product identification—not as a complete specification, a standardized purity grade or a shortcut to “best quality.” The same rule applies whether the package says 100% silicone caulk or 100% silicone sealant.
Quick rule: record the brand, model and destination market before deciding whether the sealant belongs on the shortlist.
In our inquiry conversations, buyers sometimes ask for “100% silicone” as if it were a complete product specification. That question is understandable, but the label alone does not identify the cure system, tested performance, substrate compatibility, approvals, or intended use. Those details still need to be checked in the product’s current technical documents.
What the Label Actually Tells You
The wording matters. It is an express manufacturer claim about the named product’s chemistry category. Under the FTC’s advertising-substantiation policy, express and implied objective claims should have a reasonable basis and should not mislead when read as a whole.
The official FTC/FPLA materials reviewed for this article do not provide a sealant-specific percentage formula for 100% silicone. 16 CFR Part 500 sets identity and other package-information rules for covered household consumer commodities; that scope should not be extended automatically to every industrial package.
Why “100%” Does Not Mean One Ingredient
Commercial silicone sealants are formulated systems. A finished cartridge may involve a silicone polymer system plus cure components, fillers, catalysts, pigments or other functional additives. The combination varies by formulation and is controlled by the named product’s current documents.
That is why 100% silicone should not be read as “this cartridge contains one pure chemical substance.” It also gives you no reliable way to calculate polymer or filler percentages.
An SDS answers a different question. OSHA’s SDS requirements focus Section 3 on hazard communication for mixtures; they do not make the SDS a complete recipe. Use it for hazard and handling information, not to calculate a silicone percentage or prove that an unlisted ingredient is absent.
The Questions That Still Matter
Before shortlisting a sealant, separate the front-label claim from the fields that govern actual use.

ASTM C920-18(2024) keeps Type, Grade, Class and Use as separate fields. The official ASTM page also makes clear that conformity does not make one sealant suitable for every application or substrate. The marketing phrase cannot replace that classification—or the product-specific suitability check.

Same Label, Different Technical Profiles
Two products can both use a broad silicone label and still have different technical profiles. The difference is found in the fields behind the label.

The label alone cannot tell you which technical profile you are buying. Treat it as an identity clue, then verify the current TDS, SDS and approval documents for that model and market.
A Practical Label Check
Before requesting a sample or comparing products:
- Record the identity. Note the manufacturer, full model, SKU or color when relevant, destination market and document revision.
- Find the cure field. Check the stated cure system and whether the product is one- or multi-component.
- Find the tested classification. Record the named standard and the applicable Type, Grade, Class, Use or other designation.
- Match the application. Compare the joint, exposure, both substrates, finishes and listed limitations with the project.
- Confirm separate approvals. If the job needs a certification or special-use approval, require it for that product and market.
When those fields line up, continue the shortlist and any required adhesion or compatibility testing. When a model, revision, classification or approval is missing, ask for the supporting document rather than filling the gap from the front label.
